“All propaganda must be so popular and on such an intellectual level, that even the most stupid of those toward whom it is directed will understand it…. Through clever and constant application of propaganda, people can be made to see paradise as hell, and also the other way around, to consider the most wretched sort of life as paradise.”
“I simply say to you”
Blair’s most used phrase.
Sometimes, writing about current events becomes just too much for me. After all, I’ve got feelings too you know. And the events of the past couple of weeks have not only stretched my analytic powers to their limits, my feeling of utter disgust at the hypocrisy never mind the lies, has reached an all-time low (or is it extreme?). Whatever, it strikes me that they get more brazen with every passing day in their utterances. Is it because they know we switched off ages ago or simply because they know there’s nothing we can do about any of it except whinge?
“…which is not a matter of trust but of judgement”
“…disagree fundamentally with the judgement that led to war.”
“Iraq in March 2003 was an immensely difficult judgement.”
“That is the judgement.”
“And my judgement then and now…”
All from a single speech by Blair at Sedgefield, March 5 2004
And this from the notorious September dossier:
“As a result of the intelligence we judge that Iraq has…” etc, etc
Judgement I hear you cry. What judgement? Evangelist, propagandist, prototypical button-pusher, evader extraordinaire but judge? Well take your pick but whatever view you take of Blair it’s the nature of his language and the way he delivers it – the hand gestures, the stance, that evil smirk that verges on rictus – that eventually is his downfall just as much as his lies and avoidance of the issues. But as Blair says, don’t trust the bastard, merely let him judge for you even if, as he says, you disagree with his judgment, but then you can’t win with a slimy character like Blair even if his judgement was immensely difficult for him to make but in any case, “I simply say to you…let me be the judge”.
Is it just me or do others feel the same way about this political marionette who in spite of coming across with a hand-wringing kind of ‘sincerity’ (the kind that Bible-belt preachers use when taking that last cent from poor folks like Marjo did), it never seems to wear thin or is it that people have just switched off from the political process entirely? And who can blame them except of course, come Armageddon…sorry that’s Bush’s line isn’t it.
I’ve struggled with this column for days now, indeed I’ve written it about three times and abandoned the enterprise in disgust and in a failure of my ability to encompass what I feel about the country I inhabit and its political class that knows no shame.
But above all, it’s the media’s complicity in this process that is the most disgusting aspect of what passes for a civilisation. If I didn’t know better I’d say that they too were in state of shock as this must surely be the most blatant abandonment of whatever shreds of principle Blair and his gangster cronies ever claimed to have had.
And so now I suppose you want me to do some kind of analysis of this bunch of murderers and thieves but frankly, why don’t we let them speak for themselves starting with those who own the media:
“News is what someone wants to suppress. Everything else is advertising”.
Former NBC news prez Rubin Frank
And given all the lies we have been told about the ‘road map’ (to a Palestinian hell on earth), perhaps a few choice quotes serve the cause of truth far better than any cries of outrage I can utter:
“Everybody has to move, run and grab as many (Palestinian) hilltops as they can to enlarge the (Jewish) settlements because everything we take now will stay ours…Everything we don’t grab will go to them.”
—Ariel Sharon, then Israeli Foreign Minister, addressing a meeting of the Tsomet Party, Agence France Presse, Nov. 15, 1998.
Or how about these little ‘gems’ from the ‘chosen’ people:
“The blood of the Jewish people is loved by the Lord; it is therefore redder and their life is preferable.”
— Rabbi Yitzhak Ginsburg, head of the Kever Yossev Yeshiva (school of Talmud) in Nablus
“May the Holy Name visit retribution on the Arab heads, and cause their seed to be lost, and annihilate them.
“It is forbidden to have pity on them. We must give them missiles with relish, annihilate them. Evil ones, damnable ones.”
Israeli Rabbi Ovadia Yosef , quoted in Ha’aretz April 12, 2001
And rather than do some high-sounding analysis of Blair and Bush, better their ‘blood brother’ speak for them too:
“We stand for the maintenance of private property… We shall protect free enterprise as the most expedient, or rather the sole possible economic order.”
— Adolph Hitler
After all, when all’s said and done, this is what it’s all about or, as Fidel Castro put it:
“If there ever was in the history of humanity an enemy who was truly universal, an enemy whose acts and moves trouble the entire world, threaten the entire world, attack the entire world in any way or another, that real and really universal enemy is precisely Yankee imperialism.”
