Video: Jazz on a Summer’s Day

2 June 2017 — Youtube

Possibly the best movie on Jazz ever. I saw it first when I was 12 years old (opposite Some Like it Hot, would you believe). My mum took me a couple of years after my father had died to cheer me up if I remember correctly. It blew me away. (1:21:32)

JAZZ ON A SUMMER’S DAY captures Louis Armstrong, Thelonious Monk, Chuck Berry, Mahalia Jackson, and many others performing at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival.
Set at the Newport jazz festival in 1958, this documentary mixes images of water and the town with performers and audience. The film progresses from day to night and from improvisational music to Gospel. It’s a concert film that suggests peace and leisure, jazz at a particular time and place.
Louis Armstrong, Gerry Mulligan, Thelonious Monk, Jack Teagarden, Eric Dolphy, Chuck Berry, Anita O’Day, George Shearing, Jimmy Giuffre, Jim Hall, Chico Hamilton, Sonny Stitt, Mahalia Jackson, Dinah Washington, Max Roach…
Directors: Bert Stern, Aram Avakian
