[I think it’s time to republish a piece I wrote 15 years ago, in 2004, though clearly very few took notice of it then, will it be any different this time? I doubt it, it’s probably already too late to do anything about it. What the Labour government initiated in 2004 has now reached, not only fruition but is now sweeping the ‘democratic’ West as the crisis of capital intensifies and opposition to neoliberalism intensifies. I call it what it is, Fascism. Maybe not the Fascism of Hitler or Mussolini, there are no jackboots, they don’t need them this time, they have built the corporate-security state, a state that has us all on file, a state that records our movements, a state that knows what we read, who we see,  a state that now works in tandem with its corporate masters just as Mussolini’s Fascism did, a state that makes Orwell’s 1984 amateurish by comparison.  Reading through it, I don’t think I need to alter one word. ‘The Sikh communities’ campaign to maintain customs inappropriate in Britain is much to be regretted. Working in Britain, particularly in the public services, they should be prepared to accept the terms and conditions of their employment. To claim special communal rights (or should one say rites?) leads to a dangerous fragmentation within society. This communalism is a canker; whether practised by one colour or another it is to be strongly condemned.’

David Blunkett? No, this was John Stonehouse, Labour member of parliament on 17 February of the same year as Powell’s infamous ‘rivers of blood’ speech and quoted by Powell in his own speech.

It’s a beautiful day in London, the first real spring day, warm and sunny. A light lunch in Brockwell Park here in South London with a friend, a chance to soak up some sun and generate a little extra vitamin D, and try and order my thoughts somewhat for what was left of the day.

So Blunkett has finally gotten his way and persuaded his cabinet cohorts that the good citizens of the ‘mother of democracy’ must have a ‘biometric’ ID card. The card, that by the way, loyal citizens will have to pay forty quid for the privilege of owning, will contain your photo, finger and thumbprint and for the first time, a shot of your iris. All the information will be held in a national database, so that your identity can be checked by anyone with access anywhere in our former democracy.

A documentary, “The Secret Policeman” on BBC TV last night (21/10/03) sent a journalist undercover into the police force and revealed what any right thinking person knows, that English society is riddled with racism from top to bottom. The doccie included a cop putting on a white sheet aka the Klu Klux Klan, comments about Hitler having “the right idea” and so on and so forth, that shocked the established media and predictably, the powers that be reacted with suitable cries of outrage. But not before the doccie had been branded by our racist Home Secretary Blunkett, who described it as “created news”, before it had even been flighted. Today, he thought it was “horrendous”. Five of the cops in the programme resigned today.
